Optima Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design services for the comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Brown Building on Western Carolina University’s upper campus. Originally constructed in 1960, the project transformed the existing 30,240 SF facility through a full renovation and a 25,124 SF addition, creating a modern student-centered destination that supports a variety of campus programs and services.
The completed facility now houses dining services, Residential Living administration offices, student organization spaces, and student support programs, including Base Camp Cullowhee. The project also included significant site improvements, new campus circulation paths, parking enhancements, utility upgrades, and a new energy plant serving both the building and surrounding campus facilities. The revitalized Brown Building provides a vibrant hub for student engagement while supporting the university’s long-term campus growth and infrastructure goals.
